Still half in shock, Oletta ran back to the house to let Lane and Paulette know what happened. They both loved Keegan as much as she did—and knew his history.

Right now she wished Lane was still a cop. He could call someone. Lane had been an MP in the Air Force, but that was years ago. He had no current contacts with law enforcement. He didn’t even go to the gun range anymore. When his neuro-Lyme disease got worse, he had Keegan help him set up a practice range at the far end of their property, behind the house, away from the horses and dogs. They had cleared a small path from the house to the range which would accommodate his mobility vehicle when he needed it. Otherwise, he walked. It was good exercise.

Oletta burst into the kitchen. Paulette was cleaning vegetables for a salad and Lane was pouring the remainder of this morning’s coffee into a thermos. Both stopped what they were doing. After she filled them both in, Lane took her in his arms and said, “Keegan’s a big boy, now, and he’s been clean for years. I’ll call Toledo and see if I can find out what’s going on. It will be okay, Oletta. Trust me.”

Oletta’s ever-practical mother made more coffee and set out mugs and a plate of cookies in the middle of the kitchen table, instructing everyone to sit. “Brain food,” she said.

“I just can’t believe they think he had anything to do with Gloria’s murder,” Oletta said.

“Maybe it’s not about that,” her mom said. “Maybe he’s got unpaid parking tickets or something.”

Lane looked up the ten-digit non-emergency number for Toledo PD and dialed. He told the receptionist who answered what had happened and asked where their police officer had taken Keegan and why.

The receptionist was pleasant enough, but said she didn’t know anything about it. She also informed him that even if she did know, she would not be at liberty to share that information.

Lane patiently explained he was former law enforcement himself and that Keegan was a good man, like a son to them. They just wanted to find out where he was so they could help. There must be some misunderstanding.

He must have been convincing, because the young woman finally relented and said, “Give me a minute, I’ll see what I can do,” and put him on hold.

A few minutes of annoying on-hold music later, she came back on the line.

“I checked with the watch commander. He sends all the cars out and he has no record of sending anyone out to your place. Are you sure it was a Toledo patrol car, sir?”

“Yes, I’m sure,” Lane said, “my wife saw the car.”

“Can you describe the car your wife claims to have seen again? Maybe it was . . .”

Oletta put her head in her hands, “Keegan wasn’t even here the night Gloria got shot. He had nothing to do with this!”

Lane thanked the woman and hung up. He turned to Oletta and took her hand.
